This workshop conducted by Kim Brown is designed to reduce the "overwhelming" factor of conducting comprehensive community assessments in building and/or increasing capacity within respective communities. The Bolman & Deal (2008) Four-Frame Model will be introduced to provide a framework for addressing the structural, human resources, political and symbolic elements that will foster participants’ understanding of "things to consider" in coalition and strategic plan development, establishment and sustainability. The back drop for the workshop will be based on the evidence-based Strategic Prevention Framework.  

Participants will:

• Identify or review the essential components of effective coalition models, to include the following: clearly defined roles, membership diversity and engagement, documentation of lessons learned and celebration and recognition of resources and successes.
  
• Increase understanding of conducting a comprehensive community assessment, such as, effectively analyzing and prioritizing collected data, producing the assessment report and disseminating results to diverse audiences to create buy-in for chosen strategies.
  
• Increase familiarity with the strategic planning process using assessment results.
  
• Identify resources (human and economic) for successful deployment and implementation of each community-specific strategic plan.
  
• Discuss potential barriers and modifications.
  
• Use provided tools to participate in a mock strategic planning session that will foster a clearer understanding of defining and aligning local mission, goals and objectives.
  

 Key Objectives:

• Identify key components of coalition structures and key roles. 
  
• Clarify roles for implementation (collection, analysis, facilitation and dissemination).
  
• Use the Bolman and Deal (2008) Four-Frame Model as a framework
  
• Have a strategic planning template that can be used in respective communities.
  
• Consider cultural and demographic issues.
